Magic In The Moonlight

By Christian Horgan. Woody Allen brings you another romantic comedy, this time with a backdrop of hoodwinkery.   Colin Firth plays Stanley, a magician who astounds the planet because his alter ego Wei Ling Soo.  When he’s not conjuring up several magic, he spends time debunking those whom use it to manipulate others.  When an older friend and other magician asks him to investigate a psychic that seems to be real, Stanley heads off to the south of France eager to reveal a sham.   Emma Stone plays the psychic Sophie, whom has found a destination amongst the family of wealthy widower Grace, played by Jacki Weaver.  Not just has Sophie connected Grace with all the spirit of her husband, she’s stolen the heart of her son and heir.  Stanley is a stern non-believer in psychics, and he’s determined to find Sophie’s tips.  But there’s something magical about Sophie, and she begins to win Stanley over in more ways than he expected.   Allen sets this movie inside the South of France inside the 1920’s, an era he portrays oh thus well.  This film is beautifully shot, that adds to the sense of romance.  I loved the theme of magic and trickery, there’s just anything interesting regarding this planet of intrigue.  The cast is remarkable, and Emma Stone really worked for me because Sophie.   While I didn’t find this movie groundbreaking, it was undoubtedly endearing.  It’s a well-written, jolly romp with a touch of magic, along with a surprise or 2.  This isn’t 1 of Allen’s ideal videos, but that’s a big call because the man is regarded as the most prolific filmmakers of all time.  Magic In The Moonlight sits comfortably within his stable of work.  3.5 stars.
